Local marketing has a shorter list of things that actually matter than most guides make it sound like. Here's the version without the padding.
Google Business Profile is the foundation, not one tactic among many
Before anything else, make sure this is complete and active: accurate hours and categories, current photos, recent posts, and a steady flow of reviews with real responses. Most of what follows only matters once this is solid — a great website behind a neglected profile still loses the map pack to a mediocre site with an active one.
Citations: the same information everywhere
Your business name, address, and phone number should read identically across every directory that lists you — Google, Yelp, Facebook, industry-specific directories. Inconsistent information across listings (a different phone number, an old address) actively confuses the signals that tell Google how to trust your local relevance.
Reviews, asked for consistently
The businesses with strong review counts ask at the moment of a good experience, with a direct link, every time — not occasionally, not just when someone remembers. Consistency beats any clever review-generation trick.
Content that's actually local, not just tagged with a city name
A page that mentions your city once in the title and otherwise reads generically doesn't help. Real local relevance comes from genuinely local specifics — neighborhoods you serve, local landmarks, actual local project examples — the kind of detail a competitor from out of state couldn't credibly write.
A website that's fast and works on a phone
Most local searches happen on a phone, often while someone's already out and ready to act. A slow site or a broken mobile menu costs you exactly the highest-intent traffic at exactly the moment it mattered most.
Track what actually matters
Rankings and traffic are useful, but leads and booked jobs are the number that actually pays the bills. If a local marketing effort isn't tied to a real conversion number, it's hard to know if it's working at all.
